Kreativer Geist. Und bei allem was er tut, ein Perfektionist. Seit November 2020 ist „JBC“ Teil der skywalk-Familie. Ziel der Zusammenarbeit ist, gemeinsam kreatives Neuland zu betreten. Jean-Baptiste Chandelier ist einer der herausragendsten Gleitschirmflieger der Gegenwart. Wie kein anderer Pilot strebt der 35- jährige Franzose aus Briancon im Herzen der französischen Alpen danach, unseren Sport als Kunstform darzustellen. Dass er einer der besten Acro- und Freestylepiloten ist, tritt bei seinen Projekten in den Hintergrund.
JB Chandelier
In seinen Filmen wie „Urban Style“ oder „Light Line“ geht es ihm nicht darum zu zeigen, wie gut er fliegt, sondern darum, wie gut man Fliegen als künstlerische Ausdrucksform in Szene setzen kann. Jean-Baptistes Spezialgebiet ist „proximity flying“, also das Spiel mit dem Relief.
Nah am Hang zu fliegen beherrscht er wie kein anderer Pilot. Spielplätze findet er auf der ganzen Welt: Strände, Skipisten, Vulkankrater, Wolkenkratzer und Swimmingpools.
Le skywalker – und mehr Als Filmemacher und Freestyle-Pilot ist JB weltbekannt. Dass er auch Gleitschirme konstruiert, bisher kaum. Mit skywalk hat Jean- Baptiste Chandelier einen Partner gefunden, der mit ihm Neuland betreten will. Gemeinsam mit dem skywalk R&D Team um Alex Höllwarth und Stephan Gruber wird JBC Projekte verfolgen, die den Horizont des bisher Möglichen sprengen.
Welche Flügel aus der Partnerschaft genau entstehen sollen, wollen die beiden Partner noch nicht verraten. „Unser Claim bei skywalk ist „pure passion for flying“. Mit dieser Motivation haben wir die Firma vor fast zwanzig Jahren gegründet. Wir wollten innovative Ideen verfolgen, um den Piloten noch mehr Spaß am Sport zu geben. Wer im Flachland richtig weit fliegen will, muss nach Brasilien oder Australien reisen. Wirklich? Am 21. Mai gelang BOGDAN BAZIUK auf seinem SECTOR (EN C) ein 353,3 km langer Flug (freie Strecke) über das Flachland in der Ukraine mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von mehr als 46 km/h: https://www.xcontest.org/…/fluge/d…/:SeaMan/21.05.2020/09:16 . Dies ist der bisher längste Flug in Europa in dieser Saison. Wenn man von solchen Strecken liest, stellen sich ein paar Fragen: – Hatte Bogdan einfach nur Glück (mehrere Male) oder würden vielleicht sehr viel mehr Piloten dort im Flachland so weit fliegen, wenn es nur mehr Leute versuchen würden? – Wo liegen die Grenzen in Europa? Sind auch die 500 km drin? – Wird das Flachland über der Ukraine, Weißrussland und Polen das „neue Brasilien“?
DEUTSCHLAND, ÖSTERREICH, SCHWEIZ: NATIONALE STRECKENFLUGMEISTER 2018 FLIEGEN NOVA SECTOR Dreifach meisterhaft! Werner Schütz, Urs Haari und Armin Leitner gewannen in der Saison 2018 die deutsche, schweizerische bzw. österreichische Meisterschaft im Streckenfliegen in der Sportklasse – alle drei mit einem NOVA SECTOR.
Die Piloten stellen damit eindrucksvoll die von NOVA versprochene hohe Streckenflugtauglichkeit des Schirms unter Beweis. Als NOVA den SECTOR vorstellte, versprach der österreichische Hersteller hohe Streckenflugtauglichkeit.
Man wolle das Konzept der erfolgreiche MENTOR-Serie aus der Standardklasse in die Sportklasse übertragen. Das heißt konkret: Eine real erfliegbare Leistung an der Spitze der jeweiligen Klasse, jedoch ohne die Kategorie konstruktiv bis aufs Letzte auszureizen. Beim SECTOR bedeutet dies vor allem eine Streckung von nur 5,97 (ausgelegt) – weniger als so mancher EN B-Schirm.
Nachdem NOVA in der Sportklasse zuletzt wenig aktiv war, fragte sich die Streckenfliegerszene, welche Performance der SECTOR im Vergleich zu etablierten Modellen der Konkurrenz bieten würde… Eine überzeugende Antwort lieferten Werner Schütz, Urs Haari und Armin Leitner mit dem Gewinn der nationalen Meisterschaften in drei Ländern mit hoher Leistungsdichte. Werner Schütz kommentiert den SECTOR so: „Er ist ein ausgewogener Schirm, der gerne im oberen Gewichtsbereich geflogen werden will. Trotz des gedämpften Verhaltens bei turbulenten Bedingungen weist er ein sehr angenehmes Handling auf und ist auch beschleunigt ein zuverlässiger XCPartner. Besonders hervorheben möchte ich das gute Steigen in der Thermik.
Dank seines geringen Gewichts (4,1 kg bei Größe S), des unkomplizierten Packens und des kleinen Packvolumens eignet er sich auch sehr gut für mehrtägige XC-/Vol-Biv-Abenteuer. Dieser Schirm ist ideal für einen sehr großen Einsatzbereich, man braucht keine Zweitausrüstung.“ Urs Haari ergänzt: „Da ich berufsbedingt nur wenig zum Fliegen komme, möchte ich aus den paar wenigen Tagen streckenflugtechnisch für mich das Optimum herausholen. Dabei sind Freude und Sicherheit für mich die wichtigsten Kriterien. The youngest competitor in the lineup, Tom will be 20 when the start gun fires but he’s a Red Bull X-Alps veteran, having supported Simon Oberrauner in both 2019 and 2017. Before that he was a huge fan and has dreamed of doing the race for as long as he can remember. Has he got the experience? He’s been flying since the age of 11 and over the past few years has clocked some impressive results, including a joint third place at the 2020 Eigertour with Hanes Kämpf (SUI3).
The first Brazilian athlete to compete since Richard Pethigal in 2011, Antonio Filho is a military police officer and cross-country instructor who’s flown a 405km straight line and placed 5th in the Brazil championships. But with limited mountain experience he could find hiking and flying in the Alps a challenge.
Théo’s acro antics are well known to his legion of social media fans. A three time Acro World Champion, he’s been flying since he was 12 and professional since 16. But when it comes to cross-country flying and endurance on the ground he is not so experienced, at least on paper. If you look at how he describes his training regime, it’s one of the most professional and toughest ones of them all. In any way, it will be interesting to see how he adapts.
One of three female athletes in the lineup, Laurie is a well-known paragliding pilot, who has been at the top of the sport for over a decade. Paragliding World Champion 2014 and 2017 (6th overall) she will definitely be one to watch. But she has suffered knee issues in the past.
A true adventurer, Damien is a climber, high altitude mountaineer and competitive paragliding pilot. He could do very well. He’s won Bornes to Fly twice and competed at dozens of other national and world cup events, placing fourth at the PWC in 2016. But it’s his adventure cred that stands out. In 2018 he and Antoine Girard made a 1,500km vol biv journey in the high mountains of Pakistan.
The first British athlete since 2015, Steve is a promising contender with a big advantage that he’s based in Switzerland, and trained with a lot of the Swiss athletes, including Chrigel. Recent results are impressive – he came 4th at the Eigertour. He’s also got the adventure credentials having once crossed New Zealand via bike, kayak and vol biv.

The son of a mountain guide, Michael has climbed and flown from many of the Alps’ classic summits, including Ortler, Mt Blanc, Piz Bernina and the Jungfrau. In the 2017 Bordair race he came 8th between many Red Bull X-Alps athletes. Hiking up to 6,000 vertical meters every week in training, he’s looking strong.
Another young athlete, Donini will be 23 when the race starts but he’s already an Italian national cross country and acro champion who’s podiumed on the world stage, coming 2nd at the paragliding world cup in Colombia in 2018. The son of Italian paragliding legend Luca Donini, Nicola was flying tandem at four, ground handling at nine and flying at 11. With the Dolomites as his home, he’s looking like a very strong prospect.
Ken was at university when he watched a program on the Red Bull X-Alps and vowed to take up the sport. Three days after learning, he co-incidentally met Kaoru Ogisawa (JPN). It felt like fate. In the six years since, he’s won and podiumed at various Japanese hike and fly events.
Dagfinn grew up in the Norwegian mountains and is used to spending several days out in harsh weather and alpine surroundings. Over the past couple of years he’s logged over 400 hours of flight time. He’s made 200km flights, ski tours in winter and earlier this year joined Antoine Girard on a vol biv journey across Norway. “This will be my single largest sporting undertaking this far in my flying career,” he says.

Italian rookie Nicola Donini (ITA3) is a multiple Italian acro and crosscountry champion.
Supporter to Evgeny Griaznov in 2019, Andrei is a lone wolf adventure pilot who’s made some epic vol biv journeys across some of the world’s remotest mountains. These include a 230km flight in the Himalayas and a 1,600km vol biv expedition across the Pamir and Tien Shan mountains of central Asia in 2019. He says he may not know the Alps as well as the locals, “but we’ll see what happens”.
One of Chrigel’s ‘X-Alps Academy’ protégés, Hanes came joint third at this summer’s Eigertour with Thomas Friedrich (AUT3) having won the ‘Challenge’ class of the race in 2019. He has also made a west to east hike and fly across Switzerland in three days. One to watch – anyone trained by Chrigel will be good.
The only woman to have flown 500km in a paraglider (or hang glider), Yael has flown a 300km triangle in the Alps and clocked an impressive 11 world cup podiums. A ski instructor in the winter, she’s a super strong athlete but it will be interesting to see how she adapts to the race’s relentless pace, day after day, whatever the weather.

Announcing the world’s toughest adventure athletes for Red Bull X-Alps 2021
The athlete line-up for the 2021 edition of the unrivaled Red Bull X-Alps race is announced!
The 10th edition of Red Bull X-Alps is set to kick off on June 20, 2021. The return of the world’s toughest adventure race will see 33 athletes from around the globe arriving in Austria, competing to hike and fly their way to the finish line. Starting in Salzburg, the competitors will put their body and mind to the ultimate test, navigating their way over 1,000km through treacherous alpine terrain. Often covering 100km a day, only by foot or paraglider, the athletes must combine skill and strategy, pushing through pain, injuries, and fatigue to reach each turnpoint and avoid elimination.
The journey itself is an epic story, but the most important part of the entire race is the group of athletes putting their abilities to the test to compete in Red Bull X-Alps 2021. The 10th edition will see 33 world-class athletes from 17 nations pushing themselves to the limit, in an effort to beat not only personal, but also world records; 13 of whom are rookies and 3 are female. The athletes won’t be all alone though, as each athlete is assisted on the ground by a dedicated supporter, ensuring they get the strategic, medical, and nutritional help needed in a race like this.
The line-up for Red Bull X-Alps 2021 is one of the strongest yet. With returning veterans and rookies alike, we have no doubt that this selection includes the world’s toughest adventure athletes ever! They come from far and wide, including countries like Brazil, Japan and Russia. Race Director Christoph Weber says, “We always try to have an international field of athletes. We are not just filling up the race with European teams. Rather, we want to give the whole world a chance to take part in this race.”
Following careful consideration, it is with great excitement that the moment has finally arrived to announce who will be taking part in Red Bull X-Alps 2021. The line-up is as follows:
You’re probably wondering how we make the call. For example, is there a set ratio between rookies and veterans? Race director Christoph Weber explains, “We always have around 30-40% of rookies. The number increases by itself because as many older athletes choose to stop racing, lots of younger athletes are entering who look promising and strong. It makes sense to give them a chance.”
Physically and mentally, nothing comes close to the challenges of Red Bull X-Alps; and when you consider the ever-changing weather conditions, thousands of vertical meters and a distance of over 1,000km; there’s truly no telling what will happen. Does someone have what it takes to stop Chrigel Maurer from taking a 7th victory? Will one of the rookies surprise us or will we see one of the French athletes take the lead?

Austrian pilot Michael Sommerauer flew an impressive 302 km FAI triangle with Niviuk’s new competition glider, the Icepeak X-One. The flight lasted for 11 hours and 20 minutes, achieving an average speed of 26,91 km/h and a maximum altitude of 3515 m.
Furthermore, the previous day he flew a 226 km flat triangle also with the new CCC wing. An 8 hours flight with an average speed of 27,88 km/h.

3D Leading Edge
3DL technology is an adjustment of the fabric at the leading edge of the wing to control the ballooning and the creases that are generated by the curvature in this area. The leading edge is then divided into sub-panels which are sewn into each of the cells at the front of the wing. As a result, the leading edge of the wing is more evenly tensioned, which benefits the wing in performance and durability.

This technology seeks to implement the best orientation of the cloth on each panel according to its location on the leading edge. If the cloth pattern is correctly aligned with the load axes, the cloth suffers less deformation flight after flight, so the leading edge keeps its shape better and maintains its durability over time.
DRS
Drag Reduction Structure
With the application of the DRS, the airflow at the trailing edge is directed more progressively along the adverse pressure gradient with the aim of reducing the aerodynamic drag produced in this area. This increases performance without compromising safety or control of the wing.

RAM Air Intake
The Ram Air Intake system is characterised by the arrangement of the air inlets, to ensure optimal maintenance of internal pressure across the the whole range of angles of attack.
SLE
Structured Leading Edge
The SLE is a rigid structure located at the leading edge of the wing that eliminates the need for old-fashioned mylar reinforcements in this area, thus reducing the weight and increasing the durability of the wing. The leading edge will also have better turbulence absorbing qualities.
STE
Structured Trailing Edge
The STE provides a rigid structure at the trailing edge in order to maintain its shape in accelerated flight. In addition, the rigidity provided by these elements improves the load distribution, reducing wrinkles, and consequently drag, and therefore ensuring better performance.

Titanium Technology
Nitinol is a combination of 50% nickel and 50% titanium. This technology provides three outstanding benefits that increase the performance of the wing, compared to plastic rods.
